Kwija Fest Comments
Japanese translation by Lisa Louis and Hitoshi Shigeta
Towards the end of her life, Kwija and I were in bed and she said "I like that word: 'Celebration.' I think I want a Celebration of Life." It's what she wanted. So here we are.
She also said: "But no long speeches. I don't like that." At the time, I thought I was off the hook.
But as I was planning with Patrick, he told me: "Ah…I think in a Celebration of Life there kind of has to be something that kind of resembles a speech." And so here I go.
The invitation said: "Bring fond memories of Kwija."
Now I hope that today people share funny, poignant and revealing stories about Kwija.
But for some reason stories like this do not come to my mind. Instead, my mind resonates with the non-specific Kwija vibration that filled the life we shared.
This Kwija vibration is extremely vivid. I can feel it in my body.
But it is very difficult to describe in words. I think this is because Kwija was such an unassuming and reticent person.
She possessed great beauty, courage, humor, intelligence, manners, loyalty, charm and skill.
She had a style--a quirky elegance--that drew on many cultures and was all her own.
She did not exactly hide these qualities but she did not call attention to them either. You had to watch for it.
For me, the joy of our shared life was to just watch for this beauty.
To watch how she moved and acted with that quiet Kwija concentration. How she enjoyed her food with such deep satisfaction. How she moved her hands when she talked. How she smiled.
In the mornings, I loved to watch her tuck and smooth the various layers of her clothing as she dressed for the day.
And at night, I loved to watch her tuck and smooth the various layers of her pajamas before she got into bed with lucky lucky me.
I find that it is not so easy to switch to an "unshared" life. It feels like I am still living a shared life, but one that is now filled with her absence.
On one of first dates back in 1983, we rode together on my motorcycle into the Japanese countryside to visit a temple famous for brilliantly colored autumn maple leaves. Soon it will be autumn in Eugene. Without her, the brilliance of the maple leaves will serve no purpose.
It is strange and heartbreaking and I have so many more autumns to go. I suppose the strangeness will wear down but not the heartbreak.
Fortunately, with the heartbreak comes gratitude.
I am tremendously lucky that for 27 years Kwija was my wife.
That she was my mate. That we made and raised Julia and Peter. I have no idea how I got to be so lucky.
Thank you all for coming. And thank you for being our friends.
Today let's make good--in Kwija's honor--on that word she liked: "Celebration."
